The festival of Ugadi - the New Year according to the Hindu lunar calendar - is coming up tomorrow and several states across the country will be celebrating with great enthusiasm. The people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term Yugadi/Ugadhi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra use the term Gudi Padwa, Sindhis, people from Sindh celebrate the same day as their New Year day Cheti Chand.
Yugadi (Kannada: ಯುಗಾದಿ, Telugu: ఉగాది) from yuga + aadi, yuga means era, aadi means start. The start of an era) is the New Year's Day for the people of the Deccan region of India.
The Ugadi puja done with a special prasadam - Ugadi Pachadi
Uugadi Pachadi is the mixture of all six tastes. This mixture symbolises that life is a mixture of different experiences (sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise).
Panchanga Shravanam is one of the most important rituals and traditions that are performed on Ugadi. Each New Year has a specific name and predictions related to it. The year that has just gone by was called 'Virodhinama Samvatsaram' and this Ugadi marks the beginning of the Hindu year Vikrutinama Samvatsaram.
Also a specail sweet Bhakshalu/Bobbatlu in Andhra Pradesh and Obbattu/Holigey in Karnataka is famous.
It is something like the famous Puran Poli prepared in Maharashtra. A particular type of rice preparation, known as Pulihora in Andhra Pradesh and Puliogure in Karnataka is also cooked. Additionally, many side dishes made with raw mangoes are a huge hit.
